Letter from Our Founder

For years, higher education has been a constant topic in our national conversation. College may not be the right choice for everyone. But, despite the ongoing debates, a college education remains one of the most powerful pathways to economic mobility. According to the Coalition for College Access, the median salary of 25-34 year olds is 63% higher for those with a four-year bachelor’s degree than a high school diploma. Graduating from college can be a life-changing opportunity to build a bridge toward the middle class and beyond.

While outcomes ultimately depend on ability, effort, initiative, and persistence, we live in a country founded on the principle of equal opportunity. That means every student deserves access to the information, support, and college advising necessary to make informed decisions about college and their future.

Unfortunately, across the nation, access to college advising varies dramatically from one high school to another. School counselors manage large caseloads of students and do not have much time to provide each with individual college guidance.

I have met motivated and capable students who lack the knowledge and resources to navigate the multifaceted college application process. Many are the first in their families to pursue higher education—students who often hear “go to college,” but do not have anyone to show them how.

Potential is everywhere, access is not. The need for individual college guidance is what inspired me to start Access College Consulting. Together with our partners, donors and volunteers, we are helping low-income students turn their aspirations into real college outcomes.
